Don’t Overpay: How to Protest Your Property Taxes in Texas Before May 15th
Property tax assessments are out—and if your home’s value jumped, your tax bill probably will too.
The good news? You may be able to fight back by filing a property tax protest with your County Appraisal District (CAD) before the May 15th deadline.
Let’s break down why this matters, how to protest, and where to get help.
💸 Why You Might Be Overpaying
Each year, your County Appraisal District assigns a value to your home to determine how much property tax you owe.
But these assessments can be based on outdated or incorrect data, leading to inflated appraisals and higher taxes.
📋 How to File a Property Tax Protest in Texas
- Review your Notice of Appraised Value
Look for mistakes in square footage, condition, or features. - Download and complete Form 50-132 – the official Notice of Protest.
- Submit the form to your local County Appraisal District (CAD). You can do this online, by mail, or in person.
- Prepare supporting evidence such as:
- Photos of needed repairs
- Comparable home sales (comps)
- Recent appraisals or estimates
- Attend the informal or formal hearing with your county’s Appraisal Review Board (ARB).
📝 Tip: Your deadline is May 15th or 30 days after your notice was mailed—whichever is later.
